BACKPACK ID

Bridging languages and memories to foster multiple identities: "Never leave your backpack behind!"

About the project

BACKPACK ID is an innovative intervention for promoting the inclusion of refugee children at school in 4 European countries (Greece and Italy, Germany and Sweden), which are met with acute and very diverse challenges by the ongoing refugee crisis. Informed by these differences, the present approach on social inclusion advances a common account of social inclusion challenges; it sees the social inclusion of refugee children as a function of addressing the needs and perspectives of those children and their families, and local communities and stakeholders, while affirming common European values.

My name is Sumeya and I come from Somalia. Differences between the students who goes here are that some of the students have their parents with them while the others arrived as unaccompanied to Sweden. For my own sake I arrived as unaccompanied. I went by bus from a small town to a larger society named Lascanood. I stayed there for a while before I went to a larger town called Hargeysa. After Hargeysa I went to Ethiopia in Addis Abeba and stayed there for 3 months. Another bus travel to Kenya namely to Nairobi were I stayed for almost a year. Before it was time to go by airplane for the first time in my whole life when I arrived in Sweden In February 2018 a Friday afternoon.
