BACKPACK ID

Bridging languages and memories to foster multiple identities: "Never leave your backpack behind!"

About the project

BACKPACK ID is an innovative intervention for promoting the inclusion of refugee children at school in 4 European countries (Greece and Italy, Germany and Sweden), which are met with acute and very diverse challenges by the ongoing refugee crisis. Informed by these differences, the present approach on social inclusion advances a common account of social inclusion challenges; it sees the social inclusion of refugee children as a function of addressing the needs and perspectives of those children and their families, and local communities and stakeholders, while affirming common European values.

Paulina, a painful transition

My name is Paulina and I am telling you about a painful transition. My life would be totally different if it hadn’t been for this transition. A new school term started and I was really looking forward to seeing my friends again. My friends were not the only ones I was looking forward to, ever since the previous terms I had a boyfriend I was seeing. Overjoyed I entered the room and greeted my friends. All of this joy was to be over soon. In the afternoon I overheard my parents planning a move to the other side of town and that I would have to change school. This is what happened. After a few months we found a large, stylish, new flat and moved. I tried everything but to no avail! The move was scheduled in 2 weeks, it was difficult breaking the news to my friends. The last one to find out was my boyfriend who didn’t appear to be that sad. Luckily, the actual move was postponed by two weeks. When I told my boyfriend, his reaction was totally different than I expected. The same day I decided to split up with him. Two weeks passed and I ended up back together with my boyfriend and I experienced many adventures with my friends. With a heavy heart I went to my old school, Homer Primary School, one last time. The lessons were very difficult and the last one was getting closer and closer. School was finished and I had to say good-bye to my friends. Saturday morning was the day!!!
